Squidoo Pay Scale FYI

Sometimes it’s hard to find the nitty gritty money talk on Squidoo without wading through tons of ‘poor me crap’ or stats from someone else when you just need the down low. Here is a copy/paste about lensrank payout dated 12/2008: (This needs to be updated in my opinion)
- –Tier One: Lenses with an average LensRank of #1 to #2,000 get 25% of the ad pool.
- –Tier Two: Lenses with an average LensRank of #2,001 to #10,000 get 17% of the ad pool.
- –Tier Three: Lenses with an average LensRank of #10,001 to #85,000 get 8% of the ad pool
- –Last Tier (the Zero Tier): Lenses with an average LensRank more than #85,000 get 0% of the ad pool. (But are, of course, still eligible to get 50% of any directly attributable sales they make. Just not a cut of the community ad pool).

I would agree with you there! I think it needs to be revised to reflect the growth in lensmasters and lenses. Squidoo is much larger than it was in 2008 and due to that growth it is much more difficult to get into any of the paying Tiers. I know I’ve got several lenses that now are in Tier 4 with no money made on my end, yet they do generate traffic to Squidoo and they are surely making money from that traffic but they get to keep all of it.
That and I’m convinced that there is something broken on the ranking end of things. My rankings are plummeting and have been for a while, yet I’m working harder at promotion. Doesn’t make sense. The Squidoo Search really isn’t working! I can do a search using the exact words of a tag and it doesn’t show up but lenses that don’t seem to match at all do.

Just lately I’ve tried to make more sense of SEO period – Squidoo confuses me most of all. Take my top lens, Best Baked Mac and Cheese. It consistently gets hits, 3500+ a week yet the rank keeps creeping down. If one of my blogs was getting hits like that, wouldn’t it be correct to say ranking would climb (carry some authority), not fall? Hard to wrap my head around some of this stuff.
Thought it was interesting that the Pay Scale is that outdated…hmm!

I have found that if I get an Amazon or Ebay sale my lens will creep up regardless of the number of hits. I tested this last time I wanted to buy something and bought something through one of my lower ranking lenses that was getting almost no hits. Sure enough the next week it was creeping up in the rankings. So my conclusion is that direct sales my have more effect on rankings then hits. Just my thoughts.
Is this Squidoo modules or your own affiliate links? Personally speaking I’ve noticed lenses with mostly my affiliate links don’t do as well as the ones with mostly Squidoo profit modules. Anyone else notice that trend? Thinking I’ll open up a can of worms with that statement :O
There is no doubt that the pay scale is outdated, and HQ uses this as a weapon to get more content published. Build more lenses!
Great job on getting 3500+ a week. You need to monetize that with your own affiliate revenue.
The big drawback to working inside of a Web 2.0 platform, such as Squidoo, is the favortism in the rankings, and boosting via Angel Dust, Purple Stars, and unspoken ratings exchanges. So, yes your SEO is stellar for that lens and I wouldn’t be bothered by internal Squidoo LR, more than I would be about monetizing it.
Remember that authority at Squidoo is based in part on factors that are not organic to the search engines. It should always be your priority to SEO for Google and leave Squidoo on the back burner.

Correen — I’ve got one lens that does pretty well with independent affiliate links, and it doesn’t have any Squidoo profit modules on it… but it’s a targeted link list, basically, for designer sample sale sites. People don’t find it unless they already want to join. Other than that, my experience has been the same as yours.
Definitely do whatever you can to maximize your earnings from that lens that is raking in the traffic. Whenever a page is getting over a thousand hits a week, I say screw lensrank… who cares.

I like your line of thinking – needed that second ‘kick in the cornflakes’ :O
Not shedding tears for tiers, but the rankings are all over the scale so your can of worms is worth opening.
I agree that the tiers are too small considering the number of lenses. To my knowledge, they haven’t been increased in the two years I’ve been building lenses. Considering the hundreds of thousands of lenses that have been made since then, it seems like a good more to spread the money a bit more.
I know that it would reduce the payment per lens, but if I had a lens move from tier 2 to tier 1 it would make up the difference and moving more lenses from 3 to 2 and 4 to three would also increase my total payout. It might also let newbies who go good work into the pool and receiving payout a lot sooner, keeping them interested.
